A No-Kill Shelter
Heather Burnett - Founder
Heather was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and moved with her family to Houston, Texas as a young girl in 1975. Her parents were continually perplexed at the homeless, injured and abused animals she would bring home in her little arms. Her life mission grew into helping animals and educating the public on the importance of spay/neuter to halt animal overpopulation and end unnecessary euthanasia. Heather originally started traveling the United States enjoying the sport of showing Samoyed dogs in 1990. Through her love of the Samoyed breed and all living animals, she founded the Samoyed Rescue of South Texas and Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary, both non-profit 501c3 no-kill animal rescue organizations.
She has studied animal science at Purdue University, certified under the University of Missouri in Animal Cruelty Regulation and Control, Texas Parks & Wildlife Rehabilitation, National Animal Control Association certified for capture, air rifle chemical immobilization and OC Certified. She is a member of Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce, Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce, certified Texas A&M Master Gardener, licensed with the Texas Department of Agriculture, Precinct 641 Secretary and Delegate for the Presidential 2002 campaign. She is a member of the Samoyed Club of America, Samoyed Club of Houston, Houston Hibiscus Society and River Oaks Garden Club.
She has an intense personal interest in spontaneous international travel reaching all over the world, which immerges herself into diverse cultures. When asked about her excursions, she reminisces most passionately about backpacking down the coast of Asia and also discovering the beautiful Amazon of Brazil and the history of France and Italy. She always travels by herself, which intensifies the thrill of meeting interesting new people and easily divulging herself into different cultures. She also enjoys scuba diving, oceanography, deep woods mountain hiking, camping, ornithology, paleontology, reading, Japanese gardening, wildlife rehabilitation and of course, the NBA.
She enjoys her 5 horses and riding her favorite Tennessee Walking horse named Blue Thunder. Her mini horse only requires love and attention, which is perfect for the Boy/Girl Scout troops and other youth groups from the community that enjoy visiting the Sanctuary.
Her personal pets are Titan a German Shepherd, Max a Burmese Mountain Dog, Mamma a gray Tabby, Skeeter the tetherball champion and Blue Thunder a Tennessee Walking horse. She is single, no children.
Heather led a campaign to purchase Kevlar vests for the police dogs of Harris County.
Below were Heather's personal champion show dogs Mandy, Gracie and mutt Sarah performing registered therapy work in hospitals, nursing homes, children's centers and with Alzheimer's patients at Silverado Senior Living Center. All three dogs are now waiting for Heather's emergence to heavens rainbow's bridge. They all lived a pampered life and in return gave willingly and enthusiastically from themselves to others in need.
Pictured below are a special few of the literally thousands of animals that have come into Heather's life over the years. Left to right: Claire a Samoyed mix, before and after pictures. Annie a Pit Bull mix, severely burned and beaten, now has a very loving home. Boomer an orphaned kitten raised and adopted to a loving family. Max, a 10 year old Samoyed lived his life tied to a tree and had to be shaved because his fur was matted to the skin. He thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the pool and playing Frisbee. These are his before and after pictures. Oh how nice it must be to be free! Marlene a Boston Terrier mix, her story too horrendous for elucidation. The shelter volunteers and several veterinarians tried their best to save her life. She was a true trooper and everyone misses her sweet and forgiving personality. Jessie a very sweet Shepherd mix found a home with 2 little boys to play with. Pickles, one of her very first rescue Samoyeds to find a home for. Her family drove all the way from Corpus Christie, Texas to adopt her. She now has 3 little children to adore her. The last picture is just one of the many baskets full of kittens.
Thank you for supporting Noah's Ark!
Together we can make a world of difference!
